Get a pen and paper and get ready to design Kochi city !

Wouldn't it be great if one could design the city that he lives in??? A very simple question right? But just think about it again… It should be really wonderful. Having said that, this Gallan would like to let all his friends know that its time for us to design our city. Not the entire city though. ;)

The Kochi Corporation has come up with opportunities for its inhabitants to re-design two most important and flagship features of Kochi. One is the very old and famous Subhash Park near (does this Gallan really need to say where Subhash Park is? We all know it, right? :) ) Jetty, Menaka. Kochi's water transport system being the second one.

The Subhash Bose Park entrance gate (left) and one of the canals in Kochi city (right)

How is it going to be done?

The Kochi Corporation has decided to adopt the Private-Public Participation or the 'PPP' model to renovate both the Subhash Bose Park (thats its complete name :) ) and the waterways. That means, people can send their suggestions to the corporation as to what changes would they like to see in the two. And the corporation would decide on the feasibility of your suggestion/design. If you are a genius, and of course lucky enough, then you'd get to see your designs implemented and appreciated by thousands.

In case of Subhash Park, there is also a plan by the corporation to get the job done by a professional designer. In that case, they'll be coming up with three different designs from which the public will have the chance to choose one. Fair enough. :)

A better water transport facility could be the solution to the traffic mess in the city. May travel by roads from the Vypeen and Fort Kochi islands towards the town, just because of the lack of a good water transport system. Once if the corporation is to replace the age old boats and also if they are to increase the frequency of services, then a huge percent of this traffic can be diverted ff the roads. Civic bodies have had a look into the issue and are open for suggestions from us, the public.

The basic intention behind adopting the PPP model is to have an impact on the public's attitude. After all, these spaces are kept for us and who else should we expect to take care of them? :)

Tecom to pump in more funds for Smartcity Kochi

Tecom to pump in more funds for Smartcity Kochi

Tecom, the promoters of the SmartCity Kochi project, is in the process of pumping in more funds to take the project forward.

While Emirates NBD, a leading banking group in UAE, will be main financier, support finance is being sought from the Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) Bank.

IDBI Bank had consulted one of the director board members of SmartCity Kochi to evaluate the feasibility of the project. The bank is said to have received a positive feedback.

In a letter sent to the then Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan last month, the Supreme Fiscal Committee of the Dubai government had emphasised the need to pump in further investments by SmartCity and the State government in the ratio of 84 per cent and 16 per cent respectively during the three quarters between April and December this year. The initial investment of Rs. 120 crore made by the partners had been exhausted on acquisition of land, project development cost and operating expenditure since 2007.

Dr Baju George is the new Smart City Kochi CEO

Early HIV Treatment Reduces Transmission

The World Health Organization is calling the results of a new study a "crucial development" in HIV treatment. The U.S. National Institutes of Health studied almost 1,800 couples from countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas in which one partner was infected with HIV. The researchers found that the couples, in which the infected partner was started on antiretroviral medications immediately after diagnosis, had a 96% decrease in the rate of HIV transmission to the uninfected partner, compared to couples in which the infected partner was given antiretroviral drugs only when their white blood cell counts decreased. Among those who started therapy immediately after diagnosis there was only one case of transmission between partners. In the other group there were 27 HIV transmissions. The study was cut short by four years due to the successful outcome thus far, and will no doubt affect current recommendations for HIV treatment.

The Kochi Mayor is just a mouse click away !

In a time when everything in the real world is shifting to a virtual base online, no is willing to be left behind in the areas of technology and social networking. From being a site merely aimed at connecting people, promotion of products, movies and budding musicians have become common on Facebook.

Now even the government and related authorities are making their presence felt online. After the Kochi City Police, its our very own city mayor Tony Chammany who has joined the social networking site in order to reach out to the public and listen to their grievances. And the timing couldn't be more perfect- especially when the city is suffering from severe infrastructural problems like pothole-ridden roads, insufficient lighting, sanitation and hygiene.

Fortunately, the honourable mayor has opened up his account in form of a FB Page, which makes it easier for all of us Gallans to immediately connect with him with a simple click on the 'Like' button (Kochi Police, please follow the mayor).

Look of mayor Tony Chammany's Facebook Page

Unlike most other politicians who create a page and leave it hollow and empty without any updates, Mr. Chammany makes regular updates regarding his day to day activites and public visits on his page. Occasionally he gives us teasers and sneak previews regarding upcoming projects and plans in the city. The best thing is , HE REPLIES and actually supports the Metro Rail project. How much cooler can our Mayor get? :)

So get ready to visit his page and do have a little chit chat with him regarding your views and opinions about the corporation's actions on various issues (IPL is a done deal for now, so no more of that please). Let him know what you expect from him and his guys at the Kochi Corporation.

Our mayor can be found at http://www.facebook.com/mayorkochi.

Come on guys, let's change this city for good. :)

Chances for Kochi Tuskers Kerala to make it to the playoffs

Chances for Kochi Tuskers Kerala to make it to the playoffs

Well, to say, it was not that great an IPL season that Kochi Tuskers Kerala have had so far. It was a mix of some huge and thrilling wins and some very disappointing loses. But after all, IPL 2011 together with the KTK did a great favor to our local lads Raiphi Vincent Gomez and Prashanth Parameswaran by giving them a platform to come into the scene. As of today (5 May 2011) we (KTK) have played 11 and won 5, with 10 points in total and a very poor run rate of -0.624. :(

So, what all are the possible permutation-combinations that could enable the Kochi Tuskers Kerala to enter the final round of IPL 2011 or the 'playoffs' as it is termed? This Gallan has some analysis results for you…

- Winning in the remaining three matches is mandatory. No question on that.

- If we are to loose one match, then that means we would end up with 14 points. And that in turn means there would be a huge probability that our points could be in level with Chennai Super Kings and/or Kolkata Knight Riders. And it depends on how many of their remaining matches CSK and KKR wins.

- But again as quoted before, we have a very poor net run rate of -0.624. Its in fact the lowest net run rate possessed by any team in IPL 2011. So, even though if our points are to tie with CSK and KKR, we won't be able to make it to the playoffs. Unless we win with huge margins and the other two lose with the same.

- So, the best way out is to not just win all the remaining three, but to win them with elephantine margins.

Although the chances are very weak, like every other Kochi'tes, this Gallan too have high hopes of KTK making it to the final rounds. Lets keep our fingers crossed and pray hard. After all, thats what we can do. ;)

Bigger and Better, which is the ‘Centre Square’ Mall !

Bigger and Better, which is the 'Centre Square' Mall !

This Gallan stumbled across this sight the other day …

Yes dear fellow Gallans, you read it right – A 11 screen multiplex in our very own Kochi..And oh boy!! We get another mall too – THE CENTRE SQUARE (previously  'Summit Mall') !!!

Getting down to the facts, we heard it right from the horses' mouth, Mr. T N Devanandan, Vice President, Peevees Projects Pvt. Ltd., promoters of CENTRE SQUARE. This mammoth 4.5 lakh sqft. mall is coming up next to ABAD PLAZA on MG ROAD. Work is in full swing and is expected to be handed over to its tenants by December 2011. A total of ELEVEN ( ) floors which includes three levels of underground car parking that can accommodate around 700 cars.

The anchor shops include CENTRAL and CINEPOLIS. The former takes up around 1.5 lakh sqft. of food, shopping and celebration as their caption goes. Expect the one on the lines of CENTRAL elsewhere in INDIA, may be even better.  It also means there is going to be a 'Kochi CENTRAL' soon, like the 'Mumbai CENTRAL' and 'Bangalore CENTRAL'.

CINEPOLIS India, (Indian branch of the CINEPOLIS, a Mexican movie theaters' chain), is the multiplex chain coming up in the sixth and seventh floors. For the foodies, the fifth floor will b a dedicated food-court satisfying your taste buds. Amoeba , Saree Souk and some other such big brands too are expected.

Come next December, this Gallan hopes to get you the snaps of the completed CENTRE SQUARE. Signing off for the time being… Gotta go in search of the next hot news for you. ;)

What this Gallan thinks!!!

Finally a mall outside NH bye-pass and right in the heart of the city. Have a strong feeling that its strategic location will be the biggest draw and the fact that there wouldn't b any more malls coming up within the city, will make it a real hot spot. Lets wait and watch. :)

Mobile phone based water controller from a young Kochi startup !

AmidRay Technologies (ART), a start-up based in Kochi and currently a Technopark Technology Business Incubated (T-TBI) company, was very much heard about in the news and media recently for their innovative mobile phone based water saving module. This Gallan had an opportunity to interact with Ms Pratheeksha A K (CEO, AmidRay Technologies) and the team and could ask a few questions and clear some doubts that every commoner would have regarding the product. Sharing it here with you all.

But before the interview, this Gallan would like to give a brief intro about 'AmidRay Technoligies'. Their first and only product (right now) is an intelligent water controlling module called 'CACTO' – a system that helps to save water due to various common factors like leaks, careless handling, rust and other problems in the pipeline.

The team briefing about Cacto:

" We have come up with an innovation, a water saving module that takes up the responsibility of efficiently closing the taps by detecting water loss at any stage in a building or household. Cacto   – the intelligent water control system enables saving the water lost due to leaks and careless handling, rust and other problems in the pipeline. Once fitted to the water supply pipes the user can set a time (according to usage), the 'time' the taps will be continuously kept 'on' in his house. Once the time is set, automatic control happens and water gets automatically saved. Cacto will check for water flow above the set time, if it detects or senses that there is still flow in the pipes beyond the prescribed time it will automatically shut off the water supply preventing water loss due to leakage and other means. The user can also control the system from anywhere around the world using a mobile phone and save water at home. The user can turn 'on' and 'off' the water supply using any normal mobile phone by pressing a button. Some of the important features of the idea includes the automatic shutoff facility, reset button to go back to initial state, user control using mobile phones, water leakage and flow detection, user setting time according to their usage and requirements."

The company was started in March 2011 and their first product, 'CACTO', was launched on May 3rd 2011. Thats too fast and shows the expertise of the team. The 'Amidray Technologies' have a long and wonderful way to go and this Gallan is very sure that they'll make it. All the best. :) Read on..

- To begin with, the name 'CACTO' itself sounds interesting. Could you please tell us the story behind CACTO – the name.

'CACTO' is from Cactus the plant that survives in deserts, it naturally conserves, whatever amount of water it has in its body… After a debate on the name, we decided CACTO as the best one. :)

- How did AmidRay happen?

Starting a company was there in our minds since long and wanted to do something worthwhile that will bring about a change in the society. Water is one such sector, the conservation of which is mostly done at an industry level. So the idea of saving water at the very individual level or household level came about and we really moved on to developing Cacto that exactly works well in saving water.

- OK. So how did the idea of water conservation come into your mind?

Everybody wastes water in one way or the other, either due to carelessness, or due to problems in the piping systems.  Every other day we complain about the unavailability of water without realizing how much water can be saved by simply being 'water conscious'. So, this thought resulted in the idea of water conservation. And of course yes, in the years to come water will be the most sought after element on earth…

- Thats really cool. So is there any more new products coming up in the line?

Yes of course…Water treatment and waste water recycling will be our next adventure and of course the higher versions of CACTO that can be used in various domains..And our try will be to reduce the cost of these products so that it will be really worthwhile and affordable to the 'aam admi'.

- How could one get to buy 'CACTO'? Is it available in the market now? If so, at what rate?

CACTO is not available in the market at the moment; it will be available in a few months time and the rate of the basic version will be less than Rs.2000, keeping in mind the affordability at a household level and yes the cost will vary when it comes to large buildings and for irrigation.

- A start up with a woman CEO. Felt 'wow' when this mosquito heard about it. Tell us about your team and about its journey till date.

Hmmmm….being a CEO is a big responsibility be that a woman or a man..Since a lot of things depend on you.. Being a lady CEO it is difficult to convince people that we can also carry out things well since it is the skill that matters. And after college working without money and high risk when all your friends are placed in different companies also makes you answerable, since a lot of questions come your way wherever you go..I was lucky to have an understanding family..

Having a great supportive team is really important, and that is what I have, Rohit R K and Nithin Bose are supportive in every way and I think a good team makes a great company and it was a great journey for me with AmidRay team till now…

- There would always be some great people behind great startups. Who/what all have helped 'Amidray' technologies to grow and reach this height?

Yes, some people have extended their support to AmidRay Technologies in many ways starting with Arun Balachandran CEO, Innovation Lab, Thoughtfactory pr team Trivandrum and our friends who directly and indirectly helped us…Thanks to all of them… :)

- Your message to the budding campus entrepreneurs.

Tricky one…I would say do what you like the most, be passionate about it, form a good team, who have a common goal and then things will work well for any entrepreneur. ;)

- Mind giving a free CACTO module to this poor mosquito? Hehe.. ;)

Yes why not… let this poor mosquito be Amid Ray's first client.. just to avoid resistance from the mosquitoes.. since we are going to treat all the waste water in kochi very soon..

Haha, that was a terrifying end note. :D Anyways thank you 'Amidray', both for the interview and for giving our nation or may be this whole world with a wonderful product.

Aston Martin ‘Brand Awareness’ Camp in Kochi – Pics !!

Recently, the British luxury sports car manufacturer 'Aston Martin' had officially announced its entry into Indian market, in partnership with 'Performance Cars' (a division of Infinity Cars Pvt. Ltd.), which came in as a huge surprise for many. And as part of the entry, a few models were brought to Kochi last day for display, the entry of which was limited to a selected number of guests.  . But its OK, this Gallan has managed to get some pics for all of us. ;)

When asked to a concerned authority about their intention to conduct this display in Kochi, this Gallan was told that the Kochi visit was as part of their 'brand awareness' campaign run across India. That itself shows that Kochi has grown big enough that giants like the 'Aston Martin' din't want to miss it out. Keeewl ;)

The only showroom for Aston Martin in India will be located in Mumbai. All the bookings and delivery activities will be controlled from Mumbai. The display held at 'Ramada' yesterday (2nd May 2011) showcased three models viz. 'DBS', 'V8 Vantage' and the 'Rapide'. Sadly, its most expensive model 'One77' was missing. 'One77′ is a two-door coupe, limited edition model from 'Aston Martin' and carries a price tag of Rs 20 crore (Almost Rs. 25 crores on the road  ).

Here are the pics for you. This Gallan won't be surprised if anyone gets motivated enough to get one after seeing the pics. At least, this Gallan was ;)

JT Pac Presents 3 days 2nd Abhinaya Summer Theatre Festival 2011

'Abhinaya' presents its second summer theatre festival this year. The travelling theatre festival will traverse Kerala, celebrating more than a month of contemporary themes on stage. The curtains will go up with Macbeth in Kozhikode on 26th of April. The festival will then travel to Kasargode, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kochi, Muvatupuzha, Kottayam, Kollam to culminate in Thiruvananthapuram on 07th June. Kochi edition of the festival will be hosted by 'JT Pac'.

Plays to be staged at JT Pac, Kochi:

- 'The Lesson' on May 21st 2011, Saturday

A hilarious adaptation of Eugene Ionesco's celebrated French absurd play by the same name, it presents the absurdity of life through situations that seem and appear most common and ordinary. It puts forth certain arguments on the very purpose of education and the systems that are blindly adhered to in this regard.

- 'Bhagavadajjukam' on May 22nd 2011, Sunday

The contemporary adaptation of the 2000 year old Bhodayana's Sanskrit text by the same title, 'Bhagavadajjukam' debates spirituality and materialism. The self – oriented political community, where one is driven by utilitarian behavioural norms and commercialised morals are subtly highlighted, criticised and poked at in this satirical theatre piece.

- Bard's 'Macbeth' on May 23rd 2011, Monday

This is a stylized adaptation that concerns more with the psychological realms of the central character Macbeth. The story is told through the three central characters, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and Banquo, these in turn being mere reflections of Macbeth himself. The adaptation perceives Shakespeare's Macbeth as a surreal poetry and is structured more as a ritual, a psychological saga to rekindle and awaken the soulless mob on the run.

About 'Abhinaya':

Abhinaya Theatre Research Centre – the flagship dramatic art practitioners of the state focusing on contemporary themes and stylisations that redefine the language of stage.

Established in 1992, Abhinaya has produced and performed around hundred plays. The research centre, conceived jointly by D Reghoothaman and late S Ajayan, is now home to some of the best theatre practitioners of the country. The works of Abhinaya are widely acclaimed and have received promotion and support from the art and culture hubs from the world over. The front ranking productions Sidhartha, Macbeth, Sagara Kanyaka, Bhagavadajjukam and Verdigris were staged at the prestigious venues of Asia, Europe, UK, and Latin America along with notable Indian theatre festivals including the Bharath Rang Mahotsav, Prithvi Theatre Festival and Ibsen International Theatre Festival. At the helm of the creative activities at Abhinaya are D Reghoothaman and Jyothish MG.
