Interview with Neha S Nair

First things first,  you rocked last week with Avial at Durbar Hall grounds. Especially the Carnatic fusion of Nagumo. How is it, working with ‘the’ band ( Avial ) ?
Thank you for the compliments :) Working with Avial is one helluva experience. It’s been 5 months now..and I am absolutely loving every minute of it. Being a new comer..they’ve always given me my creative space and for me, who has always been surrounded by Vintage Lataji numbers and Carnatic records..this was a whole new school of music . I must say, I was a little hesitant at first as I didn’t know if I would be able to get along with rock ‘dudes’. But, they are ethical, honest and so creative in their work.. and are known to be less verbose..instead they speak through their music .
About friends and family ( and boyfriend ;) )?
Too many friends who often thrash me for not keeping in touch :) But they’re always there for me in my good and bad times. I have an elder sis and brother in law in States who are always first in criticizing and appreciating me for my work and also get me all my latest gadgets  :) . Mom and Dad have supported me all my life.. it’s mainly because of my dad that I have been able to pursue this as a profession. And about Boyfriends.. keep guessing :) )

Any formal training in singing?

Started my training at the age of 6 in Muscat under Ramesh sir in carnatic. After I came to India I continued under Perumbavur master and B. Sasikumar sir.. and now currently learning western under Binu sir and Hindustani under Keskar. The irony is that the more you learn the more you realize that you haven’t learnt anything yet !!
Tell us about your Launch (and works)
My first playback launch was for Shyamaprasad’s ‘Ritu’ . Music is by Rahul Raj and it’s a duet with Job Kurien.. the song is ‘Chanchalam’. I also did a duet with Malayalam composer Alphonse for a Telugu movie ‘Pappu’ composed by Phani Kalyan. The song is ‘Mayaledi pilla’
What are your upcoming projects? ( heard some salt & pepper news)
Can’t really speak of anything unless it does not release. There are some really good concerts lined up..few in India and few are outside. So looking forward to it!
More of Neha S Nair’s voice Live or recorded for movies?
I love doing live shows..the ardenalin rush is amazing at that point of time when you know that your voice has to cater to a large number of listeners. But I also love the peace and the silence that surrounds me when I am recording inside a voice booth .The voice sounds magical at that time.

What exactly is Outcast vocals?. A band ?

Outcast Vocals is a musical production by a local channel in Kerala called ‘Rosebowl’. Sumesh Lal is the mastermind behind the concepts. They have done many other such series like ‘Harmonize Projekt’ and ‘Piano Sessions with Stephen Devassy’ . The whole idea is to promote new musicians and also to present music which comes with  new sounds. More like an out-of-the-box thinking. Outcast Vocals 2 is what actually rose to fame thanks to it’s youtube channel that garnered millions of viewers! We are looking forward to perform as a band too.
your most favorite moment in the singing scene till date?
It would be my stint with Avial for the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion week at Delhi. Performing for designer Varun Sardana was great and to see the models walk the ramp to the tunes of Karukara felt even more awesome. But the best feeling was to represent Kerala folk culture on a platform like that. Surprisingly, we had many among the audiences who were glued to watching us perform than looking at those long gorgeous legs :)

Rex Vijayan – Avial
Yakzan – Of Thaalam fame

Rosewbowl
Classic song by Ouseppachan sir
What more can a young malayali music lover ask for…
Thats a comment for your track Etho Varmukilin ( Outcast vocals ) at you tube. We are huge fans too :) . Tell us more about the making of the track..
You’re not going to believe this! But I was planning to do another vintage malayalam song but the whole team was finding it a little too mushy perhaps. The same day when I returned back from rehearsals I heard Etho Varmukilin on the radio and ever since the tune was playing in my head. The next day I said we ll do this track..and that was exactly 2 days before the shoot. But when we jammed ..the very first time it kind of created a magical aura! So we went ahead with this track.. everything was instantaneous ! Thanks to Ben on the bass, Yakzan on keys and Rex on guitar for making it sound this magical! And also to the audience for being able to connect with it :)
Kochigallan the mosquito is really upset. He told me that he sent a friends request to you at facebook months ago and you still haven’t accepted it ?.. Too many friends request or a bit of Jada :D ?
Hahah! I’m sorry kochi gallan!! Didn’t mean to upset you … would never never put up a fight with you cos we have enough and more mosquitoes in Kerala ..especially Kochi :)www.totalkochi.blogspot.com
