No role to play in Achuthanandan issue, says Karat

New Delhi, March 25 (IANS) Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) chief Prakash Karat Friday said he had no role to play in the nomination of Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan for the April 13 assembly polls.

'The state committee (of Kerala) decided the nominations, we did not come in the picture till the last stage. When the politburo finalised the list, they decided that Achuthanandan should also contest,' Karat told reporters here.

Asked about Achuthanandan's nomination despite disciplinary action having been taken against him twice, Karat said it does not come in his way of being an elected leader.

'Achuthanandan is a member of the central committee, the senior-most member in Kerala, he has proved his record. We might have taken steps against him but that does not come in the way of his being an elected leader,' he said.

Achuthanandan's name was excluded from the list of candidates initially released by CPI-M's Kerala state wing, but was later included after the party politburo's intervention.

Achuthanandan up against two women and a girl

Palakkad (Kerala), March 26 (IANS) Kerala Left Front's star campaigner, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan faces a tough challenge on the assembly election campaign trail from two women and a six-year-old girl.

The 87-year-old Marxist, who is contesting from Malampuzha near here, has run into an all-out attack from the trio - Lathika Subash, the Congress candidate who is making her debut; Sindhu Joy, the firebrand youth leader who quit his CPI-M and joined the Congress party; and six-year old Sneha, popularly known as 'late Shari's daughter.'

Shari, a sex case victim, died of medical complications after her delivery just ahead of the 2006 assembly polls when Achuthanandan was the leader of opposition.

He had then vowed that if voted to power, the VIP who was allegedly the cause of Shari's death, would be arrested.

Achuthanandan took full advantage of that tragic issue in the polls that year, but even after five years in power, he initiated no action on the sex case in which Shari was involved even when he took up other similar cases.

Shari's parents and her daughter on numerous occasions had met Achuthanandan and staged protests in the state capital against the delay over the case.

This time, Lathika Subhash, the Congress candidate, has started from where Achutnanandan left off in the 2006.

Just before filing her nomination, she visited Shari's home where Sneha handed over Rs.101 to the candidate to be used as the deposit money.

'This might be a small amount but the message is loud and clear and I would treasure this token amount given to me by this little girl,' said 46-year-old Subash, a former journalist.

'I know that the election battle would be tough. My campaign against him (Achuthanandan) will be issue based, and he will have to give substantial answers despite his tall promises about stopping atrocities against women,' Subhash told IANS.

Joy, a post-doctoral fellow, was the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) candidate against Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy at his home turf in Puduppally the the 2006 polls. She quit the party, received her Congress membership Thursday and right away started campaigning for Chandy.

Joy has been on an all-out attack against Achuthanandan in Malampuzha as well, taking him on his 'failed' promises of being the saviour of women in the state.

'I was suffering in his party for a few years and never ever did he say a word about this. If he cannot protect women in his own party, then how can he be the saviour of the women in the state?' she asked Thursday.

Kerala will go to polls April 13.

CPI-M in secret pact with BJP in Kerala: Congress

Thiruvananthapuram, March 27 (IANS) The Congress Sunday charged Kerala's ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist of having a secret pact with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to help the latter open its account in the state in the April 13 assembly polls.

Addressing reporters here, former Congress state unit chief Ramesh Chennithala claimed the tacit understanding between the two parties started ahead of last October's local bodies poll.

'The very fact that understanding still continues is seen from the fact that the BJP has not put up their candidate against (Chief Minister V.S.) Achuthanandan in Malampuzha constituency,' said Chennithala, who stepped down last week after a six-year stint to contest the elections.

To a reporter citing state BJP president V. Muraleedharan's statement that the party has left the seat to its ally (Janata Dal-United), Chennithala shot back by saying that this is enough to prove the secret understanding that these two parties have.

The BJP is yet to open its account in the state assembly. The party's best has been finishing second in two constituencies in the northern district of Kasargode in the past three assembly elections.

Asked to respond to Achuthanandan's jibe that the two helicopters that reached the state to carry Congress leaders to canvass were funded by the money made from the 2G spectrum scandal, Chennithala sidestepped the issue, saying the Congress party has been using helicopters for election campaigns in the past.

'It is the party high command that has sent us these helicopters for use during the election campaign,' said Chennithala.

Chennithala parried questions on reports that he is angling for the post of chief minister and also clarified that he has no differences with Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy, who is widely tipped to be the chief minister if the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) wins the polls.

'We have no difference of opinion at all and we have been working as a team for the past many years. Soon after the elections, our party in the state will adhere to a policy of one-man-one-post,' he said.

Thalaekunnil Bashir has been named the acting head of the Congress' Kerala unit.

Two interceptor boats commissioned

Kochi, March 28 (IANS) Two state-of-the-art Interceptor Boats (IB) that would be used for surveillance and rescue operations were Monday commissioned here by Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, Director General Indian Coast Guard.

The boats - C-150 and C-151 - have been designed to perform a variety of roles including, surveillance, search and rescue, anti-smuggling and anti-poaching operations and would be based in Vizhinjam near the popular tourist destination of Kovalam in Kerala and Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh.

They are the eighth and ninth in the series of eleven IBs which were built by ABG Shipyard, Surat, and are fitted with modern navigational and communications equipment.

The 28-metre ships have an endurance of 500 nautical miles and can achieve speeds up to 45 knots and are equipped with advanced navigational and communication equipment.

In addition to small arms, the IBs are also fitted with 12.7 mm Prahari Heavy Machine Guns (HMG) to augment the vessels' fire power. The aluminium hulled vessels are propelled by water jets with the added advantage of shallow water operations and high speed.

The ships will have a crew of 11 personnel each.

Vice Admiral Anil Chopra in his address termed the Interceptor Boats as the workhorses of the Coast Guard.

'As on date, the coast Guard has a fleet of 75 ships and 45 aircraft. By 2012 the Indian Coast Guard will have 42 stations and 15 Air Units functioning at various locations along the coast. Further, a coastal surveillance network is being established with 46 stations in phase I and 38 more in phase II, to ensure real time coastal surveillance,' said Chopra.

Bolgatty Palace, the delight in Kochi

The hustle and bustle of the city has taken a toll on you. And if you think you need a break from this, you can take a day off at Bolgatty, which is quite close to the city. This island located at Mulavukad, was the palace of the Dutch colonial administration centuries back. But now we have a bunch of tourists who come here from different parts of the state. With the  renovated Bolgatty Palace located in the island, it is bliss for the workers and others in the city that needs a break. You can't at all times getaway to Thekkady or Munnar for a holiday. With the huge sums of money and time that it takes, it's always better to opt for someplace nearby. When the kids do some horse-riding (but honestly, the horse looks sick and distressed to the core!), the adults can indulge in the pretty sight of the scenic backwaters, and also sip on some coffee. The reviews on the Bolgatty Palace restaurant aren't that great. As we all know, it is the basic nature of the government run hotels to be 'not so good'. The complaints regarding service and hospitality has also been talked much. But you can always drop in at Bolgatty with family or friends to have fun, chat, spend the day, and come back home happy. This weekend, maybe you can try that out.

Renowned NRI businessman MA Yusufali has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the UAE government's Zakat Fund. The decision to appoint Yusufali at the top post was taken by the UAE Federal Government, thus making him the first Indian to decorate the position. The tenure is for three years.

The appointment of Mr Yusufali will be highly helpful for the functioning of the Zakat Fund, said Board Chairman and Minister of Justice Dr Hadif bin Juvan al Dahiri, according to reports. Eleven renowned UAE citizens have also been included in the Director Board. The Zakat Fund was launched by the UAE government in 2004 to spread the importance of the Zakat in the society and thus to strengthen human values and relations. The government reportedly allots lakhs of UAE Dirhams annually for it.

Mr MA Yusufali is the MD of the Emke Group based in Abu Dhabi which has diversified itself into several areas such shopping malls, super markets, department stores etc. The business empire of this Keralite hailing from Thrissur is spread over 29 countries in Asia and Africa, the major share being in the Gulf countries. His company is building the biggest shopping mall and convention centre in India which will reportedly be opened in Kochi in 2012.

He has recently been in news for his successful role as the mediator between the Kerala Government and the TeeCom Group in connection with the famous Smart City project in the state. The Smart City project came up during the time of the last government in 2003 but several controversies including the difference of opinion in certain conditions and the global economic crisis created fears in the realization of the dream project in Kochi. However, the final deal was signed last month and Mr Yusufali's contributions as the mediator were highly appreciated.

Yusufali was awarded the coveted Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2008 for his contributions to commerce and industry as well as his services in the social work. He is also the recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (2005), the highest award of the Indian government to the Non-Resident Indians. Branded with discount all along? That’s news!

Brand Conscious Kochittes, we bring you good news. You get Nike and Levis at the best rates in their outlets opened at Elamkulam. The stores are located right opposite to Dream hotel, and you won't miss it. Most of us are brand friendly, and crave for the best brands, but when it comes to the pricing part, that literally pulls you away!! The thought of spending thousands on a backpack, T-shirt, or sandals is not really something which neither you nor your parents would be happy about ;) So here is the factory outlet for Nike and Levis (sadly, these two are the only brands) where you can dig on their jeans and T-shirts. Unfortunately, they don't have too much of an array of clothes which you can choose upon. Being the factory outlet, it's just the selected few that you have there.  And ladies who are XL or XXL, forget this place, cos' you get only the small size ones here. Arun, the store manager of Nike says that, "Nike being a brand, always has customers. We mainly sell sportswear, and the flood of people who come in for the discount is huge".  Whereas Sonal, manager of Levis says, "Jeans are sold out the most. And it's mainly gents' clothes that sell like hot cakes." So Kochiites, make sure you drop in here for the discounted rate and also for some good stuff.

Joyalukkas Wedding Centre gutted by fire

KOCHI: A major fire broke out at Joyalukkas Wedding Centre at Marine Drive in the wee hours of Sunday. The fire fighters had to sweat it out as they were facing a situation of such a  magnitude for the first time. The fire and rescue department on Club House Road got the first alert about the blaze after Saturday midnight, Joy Kuruvilla Easo, Divisional Officer, Fire and Rescue Services, said.Though the blaze was contained by the Fire and Rescue Services, it was smouldering in the evening, he said. There is no cause for concern as of now, he said.At least 125 fire personnel were engaged in fighting the fire. Eighteen fire tenders were engaged in the exercise. The underground sump at the building aided the fire fighters in replenishing their stock. The fire had engulfed the entire building and gutted almost everything, he said. The electrical inspectorate officials who came to ascertain the cause of the fire could not come to any conclusion due to unfavourable conditions and billowing smoke. The fire brigade was alerted by the passers by who saw smoke emanating from the shopping centre.Fire tenders from Kadavanthara, Club Road, Mattanchery and Thrikkakara were rushed to the spot. Later more fire tenders were summoned from other areas such as Angamaly, Aluva, Muvattupuzha and  Kaloorkkad to make the exercise more effective. The fire service personnel struggled to put out the ravaging fire. The thick column of smoke made the fire fighting very difficult.

The Gokul Oottupura,Kadavanthra Kaloor road,Kochi/Cochin

Haven’t yet decided where to spend the next eatout with friends/family?.Read down, may be it will help.
The Gokul Oottupura,
Kadavanthra Kaloor road,
kochi
Agreed Kadavnthra  Kaloor road is one of the finest strech of road you will find in kochi. And exactly because of that you have a fair chance of missing The Gokul Oottupura restaurant.I mean no one is to blame when finally your vehicle gets a chance to reach the fourth gear and well past the city limit of 60km/hr in Kochi. Its natural.
So first of all THE LOCATION.
The Gokul Oottupura is situated in Kadavanthra, at the begining of Kadavanthra  Kaloor road. From Kadavnthra to Kaloor its on the right side of the road and near to the Akshay hospital. You will miss it in a blink if you are riding/driving fast.So my advice is drive/ride slow and don’t blink.
THE MENU CARD.
Variety food in offering, but  South Indian in particular.Sad part for non veggies out there. Its a vegeterian restaurant. But I think ones in a while the non veggies should give a break to the chicken and try this for a change. The food is really good and The whole food making process happens with in your view (They have an open kitchen).More than enough waiters to serve. The waiters even though are busy serving various dishes to its customers happily finds time in between to admire the beautiful ladies, having good time at their dining table (which may annoy some.defenetly annoyed me.admiring part was my job).
I am a perfectionist when it comes to Ghee roast and quite proud to say that i review a restraunt by the ghee roast they serve. So i didn’t change my habit here too.Orderd a Ghee roast and a tea later.
I got my Ghee roast  in about twenty minutes of ordering.First I thought why the delay?.Then i got my answer. The place is not a fast food joint.Gokul Oottupura is meant to chill. So just relax ,the delay is deliberate. But the guy next to me didn’t get that point well and made it clear to the unlucky waiter passing by in loud if not screaming tone of voice
AMBIENCE
True traditional kerala Tea Shop style with features like long bench and desk. The  wall paintings and  perfect lighting makes your mind calm and heart on  relax mode,no matter how tensed you are at that moment. So its basically a chayakkada look alike but safety ,hygiene and security at par with excellent restaurants in Kochi.
FAMILY ROOM has tables for four and seemed a bit too congested to me.But i guess its not a problem ,for most families are calm, quiet and mind their own business.Unlike college students like us,who scream for attention even for having a meal. But trust me both categories can co-exist and dine at Gokul Oottupura.
THE BILL PLEASE.
Haven’t told you the best part of the story.Finish the snack and order for the bill.Had to admit, was amazed. It just cost me 23 bucks for the tea and Ghee Roast and not to mention the one hour headache that we caused to the decent customers.
THE FINAL VERDICT
I give 9 out of 10 for The Gokul Oottupura, and not ten because no good reviewer gives full marks.
So next time if you are at Kadavanthra and feels like having a veg meal/snack.Try Gokul Oottupura.Trust me,its worth a visit.

Malu’s eatout for strangers in kochi

Agreed KochiGallan has got awesome content for FOOD JUNKIES but what about the NEW IN TOWN??.I found no artikle for them. So, I decided to write one myself. Here is my 7 favorite EATOUTS in Kochi.(not in any particular order). So here goes nothing.
  • EATOUT 1)Cocoa tree is famous for its special chocolate cakes. Delicious ice cream to eat in is great with hot chocolate sauce or takes out served in waffle cones. Cocoa Tree is a great place for good coffee, superb hot chocolate and a range of teas and infusions. You can have a range of freshly prepared snacks like sandwiches too. If u want the best cakes in town ,with no doubt u can choose Cocoa Tree. They provide good service and the atmosphere is really good.
  • EATOUT 2)Caf Coffee Day or CCD throws a large range of coffee may be hot ,cold, powdered or international. It also offers lip-smacking cool drinks, cool refreshers, quick bites, sundaes, tea, ice creams, coffee add-ons etc.The negative part is that its a bit expensive.
  • EATOUT 3)Golden Dragon in Vazhakala that was opened recently is completely into delicious mouth-watering Chinese food. The menu has got a wide variety of items that you can really try out!! I think many people do not know much about this place because its a few kilometers away from the city. The background score adds effect to the Chinese ambience.
  • EATOUT 4) Vegetarians!!! Here is something for you. An excellent Vegetarian hotel which is very captivating -Sri Krishna Inn. You get delicious food, both North Indian and South Indian. It provides with good quantity and reasonable too.The staff here is very welcoming and cordial The look of the place is strikingly attractive compared to other hotels. You can be there at anytime.
  • EATOUT 5)dal roti is a small restaurant in Lily Street, Fort Cochin offering cuisine of the plains of North India. The menu includes thali’s, a range of parathas like Lachidhar parathas, Mughalai parathas, curries, rice dishes, kebabs, roti, and sweets. dal roti chai is very famous. I liked its ambience and the customer service. Its a casual place with few small tables. You should try this place at least once when you visit Cochin.
  • EATOUT 6)Kettuvallam is a small hotel located at Kadavandra. The food here is totally into Kerala style. The hotel appears to be somewhat like a houseboat. For all seafood lovers
you can step in and have all those spicy prawns ,crab, lobster and a wide variety of fish dishes .The meals here is awesome. You will have a feeling of having a sadhya .
  • EATOUT 7) Chicking at Palarivattom. I had been there a number of times. May be because its very near to my college. There is one in Ernakulam too. Chicking provides with something extraordinary, the tastiest crumb fried chicken with garlic paste, coleslaw etc.!!!!. You dont get those items in ordinary hotels. Their service is really good. They dont complain you for sitting there for long. One important thing that I have noticed is they provide u with all the help when you are there for celebrating a birthday party. They dont restrict you from doing anything. Though its expensive to a certain extent, my friends and me take pleasure in being out there.

Dal Roti at Fort Kochi

The name itself gives you a hint that it is going to be full-on north Indian cuisine. As the logo reads ” Dal Roti-Desi Khana” this place is too good too miss if you happen to visit Fort Kochi. What makes this place so special? Obviously the Oh! so vibrant owner Mr.Ramesh.He treats the place like his own baby and you can never get enough of his “you know what I think you’ll like very much..” so deciding on what you want to eat will never be a problem is this place and its never an expensive item either. The setting is lovely especially at night when its all lit up beautifully and it gives you that eery spooky haunted house feel in a good way of course. The wooden chairs are a treat to sit on after the monotonous leather seating which all the restaurants have. The menu has a variety of food ranging spicy biriyani’s to simple kati’s rolls. One more soothing add to the menu is the variety of refreshing drinks like iced tea, lemonade etc.Recently the menu has been enriched with village type local food also. So, you can never have the same type of food how many ever times you visit the place.
Its a rarity to find such unique restaurants in fort kochi which makes this place a must visit.

Bharath Coffee House

Today we have the CCDs, Barista and other coffee outlets to chill-out.This Gallan was always curious about the youth of the 70′s and 80′s. Where was their ‘coffee moments’ spent?. This Gallan’s recent visit to the Bharath coffee house gave him an idea.
One of the oldest coffee houses in the city, and still one of the best. As per Mr.Muralidharan, the proprieter and care-taker of the shop, The Bharath coffee house was established in the early 1950′s. In 1957, to be exact. The place has a huge heritage which is still visible. So don’t expect barista or CCD style ambience ;)
Location: Broadway, Menaka.
Near to PAICO, on the opposite lane. After the VIP bags showroom.
Just as you enter the broadway from the St. Theresa’ s side. Oh!! Now don’t pretend don’t know where St.Teresa’s is..
The Menu
Unlike the new-gen coffee shops, the older ones serve food as well, which is a fact known to many, (but not to all). The BCH menu include all the common veg iteams ranging from ‘pazhampori’ (banana fry) to ‘masala dosa’. This Gallan liked the ‘cutlet’, ‘uzhunnu vada’ and ‘pazhampori’. All the three were ‘yummy’ ;)
The BCH has an AC section and a non-AC one. The non-AC could seat about 30-40 people and the non-AC one has a capacity of about 20-30.This Gallan would rate BCH to be one of the best veg outlets in Kochi. So do check it out when you hit Broadway ;)www.totalkochi.blogspot.com

Cafe Coffee Day,Cochin/kochi

Commonly known as ‘CCD’, Cafe Coffee Day is the largest coffee retail chain in the country, with over 1000 outlets in about 140 plus cities. The prestigious Cafe Coffee Day has a firm presence in Kochi too, something that is known to everyone. If you think you know all aboutCafe Coffee Days in Kochi, answer this first. How many Cafe Coffee Days does the Ernakulam  have in total? If your answer is FOUR, you are wrong (Answer is FIVE  ) and obliged to read this article completely . This Gallan might have to tell you something more than that you didn’t know about the Cafe Coffee Days
Each of the five Cafe Coffee Day stores are unique and have their own signatures in the city. Heres an insight on where the five Cafe Coffee Day Kochi outlets are located.Just  Don’t  Consider the numbering order to be equivalent to the ranking given to each of the five.

1) Cafe Coffee Day Ravipuram:

This Gallan’s favorite. TheUSP about this store is its calm and composed atmosphere. The place is pretty big and spacious. There is also an open space outside the outlet at the back side.  You can also sip coffee with some fresh air(the MG road fresh air  ), avoiding the air con. The open area can house about 8-12, and the inner part of the store can house about 20-30.
Location : Ravipuram, M.G. Road. Next to Hotel Delhi Durbar. Also near to the Medical Trust Hospital.
Phone : 0484 2649160

2) Cafe Coffee Day Fort Kochi:

Now this one is a very special CCD outlet and a must visit place too, caz its located in the old house of the maestro singer, Padmashree K.J.Yesudas !!! Yes, Mr. Yesudas used to live in that building when he was young.
The specialty doesn’t end with this alone. There is one more interesting thing about this house, that this house literally has a huge tree grown inside it..Yes, you heard me right, ‘INSIDE’… The tree is taller than the house itself and penetrates through the floors towards the top of the terrace. A portion of the tree bark is visible inside the cafe. This  Gallan’s  special recommendation to visit this Fort Kochi CCD store.
Its in fact a blessing to be at such a graced place, apart from sipping from some good coffee.
Location : 1st Floor, Hotel House of Yesudas, Bastian Street, Behind St.Francis Church, Fort Kochi
Phone : 0484 2650016

3) Cafe Coffee Day at Reliance Time-Out, Oberon Mall :

Book lovers, this is something specially for you. The CCD outlet in Oberon mall is located inside the Reliance Time-out store, which mainly caters books, almost in all kind of genres. The store has been smoothly and beautifully blended into the vast book collection. You can just pick your favorite collection of pages, go there, and enjoy your book and coffee together. Nice concept. (they wont kick you out for reading a book for free )
The only negative about this place is its space. Its too small and most of the time, this Gallan had to wait for long to get seats. So always have an eye on the seats while you pick your favorites.
Location : Inside Reliance Time-Out, Oberon mall, NH, Edappally.

4) Cafe Coffee Day at the Shenoy’s junction:

This store is recommended for (not limited to) mainly two kind of people:
a) Rush-hour addicted? This one is for you. Located in the first floor, this store gives you with a good view of the rush in the city. This part of M.G.Road witness huge traffic almost all time. Its a brilliant experience to sit inside, relax your legs and look at the all-busy people, running here and there. Plus a coffee in your hand would complete the picture.
b) For those who turned up really early for the show at the Shenoy’s theatres.( Or even Padma & Kavitha   ) The best place for the early birds to rest their wings for some time, without any one to question you.
Location : Opp. to the Shenoy’s theater, M.G.Road. No more details required I guess.

5) Cafe Coffee Day at the Kochi International Airport

Situated inside the domestic terminal, one needs to be a traveler to have access to this store. A sad fact..Sob..Sob..
The accessibility is an issue and that is why This Gallan has nothing more to say about this store. No offense…
Now to the ones who have read this completely…How many CCD stores are there in Ernakulam district..? www.totalkochi.blogspot.com
